Origins
Founded between 1559 and 1577 by the well-to-do Pan family, these classical Chinese
gardens are a fine example of Ming-dynasty design, although they were ransacked during
both the Opium War and the Taiping Rebellion. Note the ingenious use of alcoves, win-
dows and doorways, which lends an impression of size to a relatively small area.
Garden Highlights
Keep an eye out for the Great Rockery and Sansui Hall, two of the first sights you will en-
counter upon entering the garden. Another curiosity is the Exquisite Jade Rock, which
