Surfing
In summer, when the water's warm and there's a soft breeze in the air, the south swell
comes up. It's surf season, so—call a fire fighter? Yep, the HawaiianFireSurfSchool ( & 888/
955-7873 or 808/737-3473; www.hawaiianire.com ) is owned and operated by the Honolulu
firefighters. The instructors (all firefighters) think safety first and transport their clients from
Waikiki to a very safe, remote beach in Kalaeloa on West Oahu, where they can practically
have the beach all to themselves. Prices are very reasonable: Two-hour group lessons (one
teacher for every three students) are $99 for kids and $109 for adults. Expect to spend about 45
minutes on the beach learning the basics and then about 75 minutes in the water. You couldn't
be in safer hands!
Now there's no excuse not to learn to surf in Hawaii: Hans Hedemann, a champion surfer
for some 34 years, has opened the HansHedemannSurfSchool at the Turtle Bay Resort ( &
808/924-7778; www.hhsurf.com ). His classes range from one-on-one private sessions to group
lessons (four students to one teacher) and begin at $75 for a 2-hour lesson. There's another
location in Waikiki.
