Where better to learn to surf than Oahu?
If you just want to rent a surfboard in Waikiki, Waikiki Beach Activities, on the beach
fronting the HiltonHawaiianVillage ( & 808/951-4088; www.waikikibeachactivities.com ) , at
one end of Waikiki; and Aloha Beach Service, facing the Moana Surfrider Hotel ( & 808/
922-3111, ext. 2341), at the other end of Waikiki, both rent surfboards and other ocean toys.
Surfboards are also available for rent on the North Shore at Surf-N-Sea, 62-595 Kamehameha
Hwy., Haleiwa ( & 808/637-9887; www.surfnsea.com ), for $5 to $7 an hour. They offer lessons
for $85 for 2 hours. (For the best surf shops, where you can soak in the culture as well as pick
up gear.)
On the windward side, call Kimo'sSurfHut, 151 Hekili St., across from Don Quijote, in
Kailua ( & 808/262-1644; www.kimossurfhut.com ). Kimo and his wife, Ruth, couldn't be more
friendly and helpful. In addition to surfboards that rent for $50 a day, Kimo has a personal
collection of vintage surfboards lovingly displayed on the walls of his shop and will gladly
tell you the pedigree and history of each board. Although Kimo doesn't offer formal surfing
lessons, he'd be happy to give you pointers.
