Nachtbussen (night buses, 1am to 6am, every hour) run after other transport stops. A
ticket costs €4.
Bicycle
Best for... Rolling like a local, Eastern Docklands, Vondelpark explorations.
Rental shops are everywhere; most are open from 9am to 6pm (at least).
Prices for single-speed 'coaster-brake' bikes average €12.50 per 24-hour period. Bikes
with gears and handbrakes cost more.
You'll have to show a passport or European national ID card, and leave a credit card im-
print or pay a deposit (usually €50).
MacBike ( www.macbike.nl ) is the most touristy rental company. Bikes are equipped
with big signs that say 'look out!' to locals. But it has handy locations at Centraal Station
(Stationsplein 5) and near Leidseplein (Weteringschans 2). It also sells great maps.
Mike's Bike Tours ( 622 79 70; www.mikesbiketours.com ; Kerkstraat 134) and Black Bikes (
670 85 31; www.black-bikes.com ; Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal 146) rent signless cruisers.
Bike locks usually are provided; use them, as theft is rampant.
Helmets are generally not available (the Dutch don't wear them).
Boat
Best for... North Amsterdam destinations such as EYE Film Institute, NDSM-werf.
Free ferries to Amsterdam-Noord depart from piers behind Centraal Station.
The ride to Buiksloterweg is the most direct (five minutes) and runs 24 hours.
Another boat runs to NDSM-werf (15 minutes) between 7am (from 9am weekends) and
midnight.
Another goes to IJplein (6.30am to midnight).
