Observation
Observations of interactions and site conditions were recorded on an ongoing
basis in field notes, supplemented periodically by photographs and video
recordings. Specific observation times were also set aside for transect walks
through the farming site. Field notes were transcribed and coded for themes
that emerged during the research process. N-vivo software was used to
manage the rich qualitative data from both the field notes and the focus
groups.
Questionnaires
During the research process, four separate questionnaires regarding different
and at times overlapping samples were administered by farmers, the
researcher and university students to a total of 154 farmers. These individuals
were selected by random sampling and were between the ages of 25 and 50,
with 150 out of 154 being men. The preponderance of men in the sample is
due to the fact that most women involved in UA are active in the markets;
therefore,
