This has had the expected effect that tourists (both foreign travelers and Amman
residents) are beginning to bemoan the loss of the rustic charm that at one time had
characterized the ramshackle village perched at the edge of the wadi. Such concerns
about balancing modernization with traditional values and tourism are important for
the management of areas such as the Iraqi marshlands (France in Reed 2005) as well
as elsewhere (see chapters 4 and 5).
Tourism can be a positive force for economic progress and cross-cultural under-
standing, but only if it is tightly regulated and monitored so that it benefits the indig-
enous culture as much as it brings enjoyment to the foreign tourist (Khouri 1997; see
