the Dead Sea, most overtly discerned through the rapid expansion of luxury hotels
(FigureĀ 16.15), is thought to be damaging to Jordan's natural heritage. But alterna-
tive models do exist based on the success of the Dana project. One such is the Taybet
Zaman tourist village near Petra, which has won an international award for achieve-
ment in cultural heritage and environmental preservation and is becoming recog-
nized as a signature case study in green development in the Middle East (Anonymous
2006) with possible transference to other locations in the region (Anonymous 2007).
