The section size of the sole plate timber is dependent on the section size of the studs that
are fixed to it, with the same-section timber being used for both.
Metal straps are used to secure the sole plate.
Studs
The function of the studs is to take the load of the roof and upper floors down to the found-
ations, and to provide support for the hempcrete. Studs are fixed to the sole plate with
skewed stainless-steel nails or screws (or hot-dip galvanized nails), or stainless-steel angle
brackets, and extend to the wall plate at the floor or roof above (see Figure 5). They are
spaced at regular centres, usually 400mm or 600mm depending on the specifications of the
frame.
