French Hospital
Leaving the square, cross the road and climb the 16 steps into Dongjiaomin Xiang, once
known as Legation St. The red-brick building next to the Tian'an Hotel at No 39 was the
former French Hospital.
Legation Quarter
A little further on, through a grey-brick archway on your right, stands the elegant former
Legation Quarter. Formerly the US embassy until 1949, and then briefly the Beijing resid-
ence of the Dalai Lama, it has now been converted into a trendy restaurant zone.
