In-Depth Information
To alleviate the communication cost of monitor services, a message gate-
way service is used only for transmitting requests and responding
between monitor services and grid users. As a result, data processing and
data transmission are separated.

Visualization is implemented with an http server plus servlet and java
applet, which has several forms (tables, histograms) of data presentation.
Measurement data are retrieved from monitor services or a monitoring
service gateway. Users can view the grid by simply browsing the Web
pages. Geographical Information System (GIS) is introduced to locate
resources from their geographical location on maps. An open-source
toolkit JFreeChart [40] is used for diagram plotting support. Basic real-
time visualization is implemented with dynamic resource information.
Management actions can also be performed through the GUI client.

Features
Compared with existing distributed monitoring system, CGSV has the
following features:
Supporting different data sensors: CGSV provides an adaptor,
which can interoperate with third-party monitoring tools. This
feature makes CGSV capable of providing as much performance
data as possible.
History data collecting: CGSV collects the history data with the
achieved repository. The stored data can be used as data analysis
for later use; for example, performance forecasting based on the
history data.
In accordance with latest efforts in SOA and grid communities:
CGSV supports WSRF and WSDM, which uses java RMI to imple-
ment WS-Notii cation, is compatible with the latest Apache Muse
specii cation [41].

Fault-Tolerant Grid Platform
The fault-tolerant grid platform is one of the i rst attempts at dependable
computing in the ChinaGrid project. The fault-tolerant grid platform
(FTGP) is mainly trying to target hardware crashing and middleware
crashing. FTGP is based on the Globus fault detection service [42]. FTGP
addresses the fault tolerance with the following points:
Multiple levels: The design of the FTGP provides system-level
components fault tolerance and application-level fault tolerance.
