section of the old city walls, built nearly
five hundred years ago.

the Dutch magazine with a lucky shot
from a cannonball. It also houses the
excellent, partially interactive Museum of
Macau (Tues-Sun 10am-6pm; MOP$15;
W macaumuseum.gov.mo), which
provides a wonderful introduction to the
territory, with the two cultures - Chinese
and Portuguese - presented side by side,
from early oracle bone script and China's
unique inventions (gunpowder, paper,
printing and compass-making) to
Portugal's maritime achievements. You

different street hawkers, learn about
firework-making and check out the
latest architecture in the contemporary
Macau gallery.

Fortaleza do Monte and Museum
of Macau
Immediately east of São Paulo looms
another early seventeenth-century
monument, the impressive Fortaleza do
Monte (daily 7am-7pm; free), which
presents a startling contrast to the
bristling modernity of Macau. Built
between 1617 and 1626, this imposing
fortress covers an area of 10,000 square
metres. It was only once used in a
military capacity: to repel the Dutch in
