Around Praça Luís de Camões
One of the nicest parts of Macau lies a
few hundred metres northwest of São
Paulo around Praça Luís de Camões .
North, facing the square, is the Jardim
Luís de Camões (daily 6am-10pm; free),
a shady park full of tai chi enthusiasts
built in honour of the great sixteenth-
century Portuguese poet, Luís de
Camões, who is thought to have been
banished here for part of his life.
Immediately east of the square lies the
Cemeterio Sao Miguel (daily
8.30am-5.30pm; free), where all the
non-Catholic traders, visitors, sailors and
adventurers who happened to die in
Macau in the early part of the nineteenth
century are seeing out eternity.
Colina da Guia and around
Colina da Guia is Macau's highest hill,
and its summit is crowned by the
seventeenth-century Guia Fortress (daily
9am-5.30pm), the dominant feature
of which is a charming whitewashed
lighthouse , added in the nineteenth
century and the oldest anywhere on
the Chinese coast. It's still in operation,
competing with the casinos to light up
the sky at night, and in the small gallery
next to it there are the different typhoon
warning symbols on display (same hours).
You can take a cable car (Tues-Sun
8am-6pm; MOP$3) up the hill from
the Flora Garden or climb the steps
underneath it. At the top there are some
superb views over the whole peninsula,
