The Manual Target Discovery Process
After the agent has been deployed on the host you can start configuring the discovery process. There are two ways to
discover targets using the Enterprise Manager console. The well-known, user-defined way of manually discovering
targets in Grid Control is now called “Guided discovery” in Cloud Control. A second, more elegant way of target
discovery is available as well, which makes a lot of sense in the consolidated environment. After a new host has been
rolled out with an agent installed it makes sense to start a manual discovery of the components that have so far been
installed. In most cases these components are the database home, a listener, and the ASM instance if applicable. Once
these are registered one could define automatic target discovery to take the dynamic nature of the Database-As-A-Service
environment into account.
Let's begin the discovery process by manually discovering targets. Navigate to Setup Add Target Add
Targets Manually. In the resulting screen you need to select the radio button “Add Non-Host Targets Using Guided
Process (Also Adds Related Targets)”. Select “Oracle Database, Listener and Automatic Storage Management”
from the drop-down menu “Target Types”. Click on the “Add using Guided Discovery” button to start the discovery
process. Figure 8-20 shows this screen.
