Commercial Farmer. Steve Murphy and his brother have beef cows and a
contract hog operation. There are about 40 cows of a mixed breed. They are fed on
pasture all year with some mineral supplement. Their calves are raised on grass
and, before being sold, are fed some ground maize from the farm with some added
vitamins and minerals. The contract swine operation will feed about 1200 weaned
pigs starting when they are 6 weeks old. They are raised in a special house, shown
in Figure 7.3, with slatted floors (to permit manure to drop through). All feed is sup-
plied by the contracting company for 15 weeks. After 15 weeks, the pigs are taken
back by the contracting company and the house is cleaned and prepared for the
next batch of pigs. With two batches of pigs each year, they will provide around
2400 pigs yearly.
