FARM ANIMALS AND FISH
7.1
ANIMALS ON THE THREE FARMS
Subsistence Farmer. Donio and his wife, Rosita, only own a few chickens such
as the one shown in Figure 7.1. They are “free-range” chickens that roam the neighbor-
hood. Occasionally, Donio will feed the chickens with surplus grain or rice bran. The
hens provide eggs and, on special occasions, meat. The family does not normally sell a
chicken, unless there is urgent need for money. Sita cares for a neighbor's buffalo, and
Donio cares for an 8-month-old buffalo owned in partnership with a neighbor. Donio
provides the feed, cares for the animal, and trains it for field work.
Family Farmer. A ´ da and Octavio have recently added commercial swine (shown
in Fig. 7.2) production to their farm. They have constructed a series of pens of concrete
block for the young pigs. They also have rabbits and chickens for sale and for family
use. The pigs are primarily for sale in the local market, but sometimes the family
will use one for a fiesta. They are too valuable for everyday food. They have guinea
pigs that are primarily for family use. These provide small amounts of meat that the
family can use one to two times each week.
