WORTH A DETOUR
NEW MUNICIPAL CEMETERY
This huge cemetery (Új Köztemető; GOOGLE MAP ; X Kozma utca 8-10; 7.30am-5pm, to 8pm May-
Jul; 28, 37) , easily reached by tram from Blaha Lujza tér, is where Imre Nagy, prime
minister during the 1956 Uprising, and 2000 others were buried in unmarked graves
(plots 298-301) after executions in the late 1940s and 1950s. The area has been
turned into a moving National Pantheon and is about a 30-minute walk from the en-
trance; follow the signs pointing the way to '298, 300, 301 parcela'.
At peak periods you can take a microbus marked 'temető járat' around the
cemetery or hire a taxi at the gate.
EATING
Ráday utca, a long strip whose pavement tables fill with diners on warm sum-
mer days, is a lively place to head to in this district. The area east of the Hun-
garian National Museum, particularly VIII Krúdy Gyula utca in Józsefváros, is
another happy hunting ground for restaurants and cafes. If you fancy a bite
by the water, check out the range of riverside cafes at Bálna .
