In-Depth Information
At Király utca 47 (and directly opposite the church) is an interesting 3 neo--Gotthiic
houusebuilt in 1847 with a protruding window.
Turning into Csányi utca, head southeast over Dob utca to the heart of the old Jew-
ish Quarter, 4 Kla
ál térr. The square and surrounding streets retain a feeling of pre-
war Budapest. A continued Jewish presence is still evident - at a kosher bakery and
pizzeria (Kazinczy utca 28), the Fröhlich Cukrászda cake shop and cafe, and a butcher
just next to the 5 Orrtthoddox Sy
Klauuzál t
x Synagoguue.
Walk up Holló utca and turn left. Enter the gate at Király utca 15 - someone will obli-
gingly buzz you in should it be locked - and at the rear of the courtyard is a 30m-long
piece of the original 6 gghetttto w
allrebuilt in 2010. Votive lamps and stones stand be-
fore it in tribute to victims of the Holocaust. The next turning on the left is the pas-
sageway called 7 Gozsdu udv
o wall
du udvarr, originally built in 1901 and in recent years emerging
as the number-one nightlife destination in the district; it's lined with bars, cafes and
restaurants and pulses with music and merrymakers come the evening.
At Dob utca 12 is an unusual antifascist 8 monuument t
rl Luutz, a Swiss consul
who, like Raoul Wallenberg, provided Jews with false papers in 1944. It portrays an an-
gel on high sending down a long bolt of cloth to a victim. Just around the corner, bor-
dering a car park, a 1000-sq-metre 9 muuraalpainted in 2013 commemorates the 60th
anniversary of the footballing victory of Hungary's 'Golden Team', the first time a con-
tinental team beat England at Wembley (6-3).
Retrace your steps and you'll find the a Great Synagogue at the end of the street.
