In-Depth Information
Our favourite Subcontinental in Pest, this places serves the cuisine of its namesake, which is
always a bit sweeter than other Indian food, as well as a variety of tandoori cooked meats.
There are about 20 vegetarian choices and a weekday buffet lunch for 1390Ft.
INTERNATIONAL
CAFÉ KÖR
10am-10pm Mon-Sat; 15, M3 Arany János)
Just behind the Basilica of St Stephen, the 'Circle Café' is a longstanding favourite for
lunch or dinner but a great place for a light meal at any time, including breakfast (150Ft to
790Ft), which is served till noon. Service is welcoming and helpful.
MEXICAN
IGUANA
11.30am-11pm Mon-Fri, to midnight Sat & Sun; ; 15, M2 Kossuth Lajos tér)
Iguana serves decent enough Mexican food, but it's hard to say whether the pull is the en-
chilada and burrito combination
platos,
the fajitas or the frenetic and boozy 'we-party-
every-night' atmosphere. Busy bar. Two-course lunch for just 1490Ft.
INDIAN
SALAAM BOMBAY
noon-3pm & 6-11pm; ; 15, 2)
If you're hankering for a fix of authentic Indian curry or tandoori in a bright, upbeat envir-
onment, look no further than this attractive eatery just east of Széchenyi István tér. Don't be-
lieve us? Even staff from the Indian embassy are said to come here regularly. A large choice
of vegetarian dishes (950Ft to 1990Ft) is also available.
HUNGARIAN
ELSŐ PESTI RÉTESHÁZ
1-428 0135;
www.reteshaz.com
; V Október 6 utca 22; mains 2990-5990Ft;
9am-11pm; 15)
It may be a bit overdone, with 'olde-worlde' counters, painted plates stuck on the walls and
old letters and curios embedded in Plexiglas washbasins, but the 'First Strudel House of
Pest' is just the place to taste this Hungarian stretched and filled pastry (from 370Ft), with
or without a full meal preceding it.
Fillings include apple, cheese, poppy seed or sour cherry. Breakfast (from 1290Ft) is
served till noon.
