Bock's sister bistro in Erzsébetváros may have lost its Michelin recommendation recently,
but there's no stopping this almost luxurious place in the Buda Hills catering to the well-
heeled denizens of district XII. The tapas (from 1200Ft) are particularly good.
CAVES UNDER THE BUDA HILLS
Budapest is sitting on an underground system of up to 200 caves, and two in the
Buda Hills can be visited on walk-through guided tours. Most of the hostels also offer
adventurous 2½- to three-hour caving excursions of both Mátyáshegy Cave
(Mátyáshegyi-barlang; GOOGLE MAP ; 06 20 356 4406, 06 20 928 4969; www.barlangaszat.hu ; II

and Pálvölgy Cave (Pálvölgyi-barlang; GOOGLE MAP ; 1-325 9505; www.palvolgyi.atw.hu ; II
Szépvölgyi út 162/a; adult/child 1300/1000Ft; 10am-4pm Tue-Sun; 65) , at 29km the longest in
Hungary. The system was discovered in 1904 and is noted for both its stalactites and
its bats. Be advised that part of the route involves climbing a ladder and about 120
steps, so it may not be suitable for the elderly or young children. The temperature is a
constant 8°C, so wear a jacket or jumper. Much shorter tours of just Pálvölgy lasting
45 minutes depart several times a day; see the website for times.
A much easier visit is to the beautiful Szemlőhegy Cave (Szemlőhegyi-barlang; MAP
GOOGLE MAP ; 1-325 6001; www.szemlohegyi.atw.hu ; II Pusztaszeri út 35; adult/child 1150/900Ft;
10am-4pm Wed-Mon; 29) about 1km southeast of Pálvölgy and Mátyáshegy Caves. The
temperature at Szemlőhegy is 12°C and the cave has stalactites, stalagmites and
weird grapelike formations. The tour lasts 35 to 45 minutes.
