RUIN
MAGDALENE TOWER
The big steeple on the south side of Kapisztrán tér, opposite the Museum of Military History
and visible for kilometres to the west of Castle Hill, is the reconstructed spire of an 18th-
century church. The church, once reserved for Hungarian speakers in this district (German
speakers worshipped at Matthias Church), was used as a mosque during the Turkish occupa-
tion and was destroyed in a 1944 air raid.

Just north of Dísz tér on the site of Budapest's first pharmacy (1681), this branch of the
Semmelweis Museum of Medical History in Tabán contains an unusual mixture of displays,
including a mock-up of an alchemist's laboratory with dried bats and tiny crocodiles in jars,
and a small 'spice rack' used by 17th-century travellers for their daily fixes of curative
herbs.

MEDIEVAL JEWISH PRAYER HOUSE

With sections dating from the late 14th century, this tiny, ancient house of worship contains
documents and items linked to the Jewish community of Buda, as well as Gothic stone
carvings and tombstones.
