the St Regis hotel. Prices are fixed, at around ¥2500 to ¥3600 (US$400 to US$600) for a
1m by 2m carpet.
Barkhor Supermarket

The souvenir stalls that once clogged the Barkhor Circuit were recently shepherded into
this new three-storey concrete building with a Tibetan facade. It's quite charmless but
there's a surprisingly good range of products here, from butter lamps and prayer flags to
monk's clothes.

Tromsikhang Market

This bazaar-style area in the old town has the widest selection of dried fruits and nuts (im-
ported from Xīnjiāng) and is the place to buy such Tibetan specialities as tsampa,
churpi
(dried yak cheese) and yak butter. Khampa-style cowboy hats are for sale in the streets
outside.
Norling Supermarket
FOOD
Located near the Muslim quarter, this Tibetan-run Nepali import shop sells everything
from muesli and Digestive biscuits to Indian spices, sunscreen and rolling tobacco, though
at prices higher than in Nepal.
