The ever-popular Yak has matured in recent years from backpacker hang-out to tour-group
favourite, eschewing the cramped dorm rooms (there are three left) for a range of comfort-
able en-suite rooms. Reservations are recommended. The 5th-floor breakfast bar offers
great views of the Potala. Discounts of 30% are standard.
Room options include the colourful Tibetan-style decor of the quiet back block; the lar-
ger but noisier deluxe rooms overlooking the main street, which have better bathrooms; or
the plush VIP rooms ( guìbīnlóu ).

A well-run, modern midrange choice, with easy vehicle access but walking distance from
the old town, offering fresh and modern Tibetan-style rooms. Highlights include the
friendly staff, pleasant rooftop cafe and Nepali restaurant.

If you're looking for a dash of style, this comfortable Nepali-run three-star place near the
Tromsikhang market is a good choice, with ornate Tibetan-style decor, a decent restaurant
and a superb location in the old town. Rooms are dark and on the small side but all come
with modern bathrooms. Upper-floor rooms are brighter but there's no lift.
