Lhasa's best Chinese-run hostel attracts mainly Chinese backpackers, though a few foreign
travellers find their way here. Rooms are smallish but well maintained, with wooden floors
and crisp white sheets, though a few don't have any exterior windows. Bike rental (¥30)
and free laundry are bonuses. Prices rise in July and August.
Banak Shol HOTEL

It's a mixed picture at this old backpacker stalwart. The newest triple rooms without bath-
room are spacious, fresh and carpeted and the shared shower blocks are sparkling. Unfor-
tunately the older roadside doubles and singles are still small, noisy and overpriced. The
recently renovated standard rooms with bathroom are normally the cheapest such options
in town.
Bonuses include free access to a washing machine and pleasant wooden verandahs. The
majority of guests nowadays are Chinese backpackers.

A good location and some of the cheapest prices in town make this place worth looking at.
Rooms are smallish and a tad dated but come with hot-water bathroom and a computer.
The lobby is hidden behind a shopping-mall entrance.

The renovated Kyichu is a friendly and well-run choice that's very popular with repeat
travellers to Tibet. Rooms are comfortable and pleasant, with wooden floors, Tibetan car-
