ditional and modern (renovated 2014); some have small balconies with views of Notre

HOTEL
HÔTEL ST-JACQUES
d €200-260, tr €312; ; Maubert-Mutualité)
Audrey Hepburn and Cary Grant filmed some scenes of
Charade
here in the 1960s, and it
still retains original 19th-century details such as trompe l'oeil ceilings that look like cloud-
filled skies, an iron staircase and balconies overlooking the Panthéon (but alas no lift). Wel-
come touches include a cabaret-themed breakfast room and bowl of jelly beans in the lobby.
HOTEL
HÔTEL HENRI IV RIVE GAUCHE
€210/230/255; ; Cluny-La Sorbonne or RER St-Michel Notre Dame)
Reminiscent of a Normandy manor house, from its 18th-century fireplace, terracotta tiles
and portraits in the lobby, this three-star hotel is a Latin Quarter oasis just steps from Notre
Dame and the Seine. Rooms are comfortable if somewhat lacking in charm, though front
rooms have nice views of the Église St-Séverin and its buttresses. Online rates drop signific-
antly out of season.
HOTEL
HÔTEL LES DEGRÉS DE NOTRE DAME
incl breakfast €120-170; ; Maubert-Mutualité)
Wonderfully old-school, with a winding timber staircase (no lift) and charming staff, the
value is good at this hotel a block from the Seine. Breakfast, included in the rate, comes
with fresh-squeezed OJ. Rooms 47 and the spacious 501 have romantic views of Notre
Dame. Rooms have not been renovated for some time, however.
BOUTIQUE HOTEL
SELECT HÔTEL
tr €275-340; ; Cluny-La Sorbonne)
In the heart of the studenty Sorbonne area, the Select is a very Parisian art deco minipalace,
with an atrium and cactus-strewn winter garden, an 18th-century vaulted breakfast room and
67 small but stylish bedrooms with ingenious design solutions to maximise their limited
space. The 1920s-style cocktail bar with an attached 'library' just off the lobby is a delight.
