Froissart)
This 'country inn' with red gingham curtains offers simple and inexpensive French food, in-
cluding côte de bœuf (side of beef for two or three people) cooked on an open fire. Arrive
early to snag the farmhouse table next to the fireplace - the makings of a real jolly Ra-
belaisian evening.
SALADS, TARTS
CANTINE MERCI
( MAP GOOGLE MAP ; www.merci-merci.com ; 111 bd Beaumarchais, 3e; soups €8, salads €10-15,
tarts €16; 10am-7pm Mon-Sat; St-Sébastien Froissart)
This basement canteen might well share the shop floor with nifty bathroom gadgets and de-
signer kitchen gear, but its gastronomic thrust is as inspired as the hip concept store in
which it squats. Lunch, served noon to 3.30pm, is what girlfriends come here for (by the
droves), to feast on zesty salads, soups and savoury tarts, all oozing bags of vegetable cre-
ativity.
BISTRO
CHEZ NÉNESSE
( MAP GOOGLE MAP ;
01 42 78 46 49; 17 rue Saintonge, 3e; mains €19;
lunch & dinner Mon-Fri;
Filles du Calvaire)
'Old-world bistro' is the atmosphere at this tiny spot with lace curtains and a quality kitchen
that cooks classic French dishes that have been around for centuries. Its salade de canard au
vinaigre d'hydromel (duck salad in honey vinegar) and sweet medallions de veau au miel
(veal medallions pan fried in honey) are not to be scoffed at.
MODERN FRENCH
CAFÉ MARAIS
( MAP GOOGLE MAP ; 01 42 71 61 46; 10 rue des Haudriettes, 3e; lunch/dinner menu €12.90/
15.90; noon-3.30pm & 7-11pm Wed-Mon; Arts et Métiers)
Exposed stone, beamed ceiling and silent B&W Charlie Chaplin movies screened on one
wall create an appealing vintage feel in this small and excellent bistro - one of the best-
value spots to dine in the Marais. The round of Camembert roasted with honey, homemade
courgette gratin and parmesan crème brûlée are all excellent.
