With its large windows and a few carefully chosen antiques, this recently revived belle
époque cafe at the foot of Montmartre feels about as timeless as the Butte itself. Dating back
to 1894 and attached to the century-old Le Trianon theatre, it's no stretch to imagine artists
like Toulouse-Lautrec and crowds of show-goers once filling the place in the evening.
Well-prepared standards (steak tartare, grilled swordfish) are served throughout the day;
you can also just stop in for a drink.

Although nothing to blog about, the Coquelicot bakery is nonetheless a good spot for an
easy meal, offering omelettes, quiches, sandwiches and yummy pastries. The outdoor tables
occupy a prime location alongside rue des Abbesses. It also serves breakfast.
BOULANGERIE
LE GRENIER À PAIN
( MAP GOOGLE MAP ; 38 rue des Abbesses, 18e; 7.30am-8pm Thu-Mon; Abbesses)
The Grenier is another Montmartre bakery that won Paris' 'best baguette' prize, though
you'd be forgiven for thinking that its real speciality lies in the savoury fougasses (like foc-
cacias) and mini breads that come with a range of alluring toppings (fig and goat's cheese,
bacon and olives).
BOULANGERIE
ARNAUD DELMONTEL
( MAP GOOGLE MAP ; 39 rue des Martyrs, 9e; 7am-8.30pm Wed-Mon; Pigalle)
One of several Montmartre bakeries to win Paris' 'best baguette' prize in the past decade,
Delmontel specialises in gorgeous pastries, cakes and a variety of artisanal breads.
VEGETARIAN
SOUL KITCHEN
( MAP GOOGLE MAP ; 33 Rue Lamarck, 18e; menu €13.50;
8.30am-6.30pm Tue-Fri, 10am-7pm Sat
& Sun; ; Lamarck Caulincourt)
For a more typically residential Montmartre neighbourhood, head to the backside of the hill.
There's plenty to discover here, such as this inviting vegetarian eatery housed in an old cafe,
where you can pick up market-driven dishes that change daily, including scrumptious soups,
quiches and lasagne.
