In-Depth Information
Pablo Picasso - who painted his seminal Les Demoiselles d'Avignon(1907) here -
once lived in great poverty. Originally at No 13, the Bateau Lavoir burned down in 1970
and was rebuilt in 1978.
Continue the climb up rue Lepic to Montmartre's two surviving windmills: the
3 Moulin Radet (now a restaurant) and, 100m west, the 4 MMoulin Blut
ulin Blute--Fiin. In the
19th century, they were turned into the open-air dance hall Le Moulin de la Galette,
immortalised by Renoir in his 1876 tableau Le Bal du Moulin de la Galette(displayed at
the Musée d'Orsay). Just north of the windmills is Sq Suzanne Buisson, which holds a
5 statue o
f St--Deniis, the 3rd-century martyr and patron saint of France who was be-
headed by Roman priests.
After passing by the 6 Ciimetiière St
ue of St
e St--Viincent, where local painter Maurice Utrillo is
buried, you'll come upon the celebrated cabaret 7 Au Lapin Agile , which features a
mural of a rabbit jumping out of a cooking pot by caricaturist André Gill. Just opposite
is the 8 Clos Montmartre, a small vineyard dating from 1933, whose 2000 vines pro-
duce an average of 800 bottles of wine each October.
Up the hill is Montmartre's oldest building, a manor house built in the 17th century.
The one-time home to painters Renoir, Utrillo and Raoul Dufy, it's now the 9 Musée
de Montmartre . Continue on past composer a Eric Sa
idence (No 6)
and then turn right onto rue du Mont Cenis; you'll soon come across the historic
b Église St-Pierre de Montmartre . End the tour at the busy c place du Tertre , once
the main square of the village.

EATING
Not much changes in the staid western Paris culinary scene, but once you
cross over that invisible border somewhere in the middle of the 9th arron-
dissement, it's a different world. Every year sees a flurry of new openings in
the neighbourhoods south of Pigalle or along the Canal St-Martin, and the
young chefs at work here boast some of the most exciting dining venues in
Paris today.
