formation of a single metallosupramolecular architecture with either an increasing num-
ber of components or an increasing number of possible different kinds of energetically
similar non-covalent interactions because the differences in terms of thermodynamic sta-
bility become less pronounced.
4.3 Template Effects
As we have seen above, changing the equilibrium conditions by adding for example pro-
tons can have a marked effect on the outcome of self-assembly processes and their struc-
tural dynamics. The addition of components can result in templating effects. One of the
first examples for this phenomenon was reported once again by J.-M. Lehn and colleagues
when they found that chloride ions can act as templates for the formation of circular dou-
ble-stranded helicates whereas other anions like tetrafluoroborate do not (Figure 4.5) [13].
