Conceived in the 1950s, the Kulturforum was West Berlin's answer to Mu-
seumsinsel and is an equally enthralling cluster of museums and concert
halls, albeit in modern buildings. The most stunning are the Neue Nationalgalerie
(New National Gallery) in a glass temple stunner by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and
Hans Scharoun's honey-coloured freeform Berliner Philharmonie. The depth and
breadth of the art collections here is mind-blowing. Rembrandt to Picasso, fragile
Dürer prints to a flute played by a Prussian king, famous medieval masters to Ger-
man 1920s expressionists - it's all here in one neat package.
