Neukölln's refurbished prewar ballroom has an actively anti-elitist repertoire ranging from
intelligent musical theatre to original productions and experimental interpretations of clas-
sics. Many pick up on contemporary themes or topics relevant to Berlin and some are suit-
able for non-German speakers.

A 1950s cinema has been recycled into a rock-indie-electro-pop mecca with mosh-pit elec-
tricity and a crowd that cares more about the music than about looking good. Global DJs
and talented upwardly mobile live noise-makers pull in the punters. Holds legendary
Balkanbeats parties every few weeks.

Displaced by skyrocketing rent, this heavily ironic den of burgers, booze and bands has de-
camped from posh Prenzlauer Berg to friendlier Kreuzberg pastures. Owner Wally has im-
ported not only his greatest hits menu but also the vaunted tattoo parlour and a booking
policy that favours off-the-radar artists. New: the apocalyptic beer garden with barbecue pit.

With its L-shaped bar and leather sofas, this dimly lit, living-room-size cellar club exudes
sensuous noir flair vaguely reminiscent of 1940s American jazz clubs. The music too takes
punters on an eclectic journey through past decades - '20s jazz to '60s psychedelic soul, '70s
punk and '80s pop. Live concerts are followed by DJ parties.
