SEX & THE CITY
The decadence of the Weimar years is alive and kicking in this city long known for its
libertine leanings. While full-on sex clubs are most common in the gay scene (eg
Lab.Oratory ), places such as Insomnia and the KitKatClub allow straights, gays, lesbi-
ans, the bi-curious and polysexuals to live out their fantasies in a safe if public setting.
Surprisingly, there's nothing seedy about this, but you do need to check your inhibi-
tions - and much of your clothing - at the door. If fetish gear doesn't do it for you,
wear something sexy or glamorous; men can usually get away with tight pants and an
open (or no) shirt. No normal street clothes, no tighty-whities. As elsewhere, couples
and girl groups get in more easily than all-guy crews. And don't forget Mum's 'safe sex
only' speech (condoms are usually provided).
Insomnia ( GOOGLE MAP ; www.insomnia-berlin.de ; Alt-Tempelhof 17-19; Tue-Sun; Alt-Tempel-
hof) A late-19th-century ballroom has been reincarnated as a classy playground of pas-
sion. Besides the dance floor and big-screen Andrew Blake porn, there are perform-
ances and various pleasure pits, including a whirlpool, a gynaecological chair and a
bondage room. Saturday's Circus Bizarre is good for first-timers. The dress code is
sexy, fetish or elegant black. During the week, more advanced players invade for
special-themed sex and swinger parties that often require preregistration. Check the
website for full details. The club is right outside U-Bahn station Alt-Tempelhof.
KitKatClub ( MAP GOOGLE MAP ; www.kitkatclub.de ; Köpenicker Strasse 76, enter via Brücken-
strasse; Fri-Sun; Heinrich-Heine-Strasse) This 'kitty' is naughty and sexy, raucous and
decadent, listens to techno and house, and fancies leather and lace, vinyl and whips. It
hides out at Sage with its four dance floors, shimmering pools and fire-breathing
dragon. On weekends, the party never stops, starting with the classic Carneball
Bizarre on Saturday and continuing to midmorning Monday. The dress code varies;
usually a combination of fetish, leather, uniforms, latex, costumes, Goth, evening
dresses, glamour, or an extravagant outfit of any type. No dress code on Sunday.
Club Culture Houze ( MAP GOOGLE MAP ; 030-6170 9669; www.club-culture-houze.de ; Görl-
itzer Strasse 71; from 7pm Mon, from 8pm Wed-Sat; Görlitzer Bahnhof) Fetishistas of all sexual
persuasions are welcome to get in on the action at this playground for advanced sexu-
al experimentation. Gay only on Monday and Friday, polysexual on Wednesdays,
Thursdays and Sundays. High kink factor.
