Yesteryear is right now at this late, great 19th-century dance hall where groovers and gran-
nies hoof it across the parquet without even a touch of irony. There's different sounds
nightly - salsa to swing, tango to disco - and a live band on Saturday.
Pizza and German staples provide sustenance all day long (in summer in the pretty
garden; pizza €5.50 to €11.50, mains €6.50 to €18). Dance classes, dinners and classical

are held upstairs amid the stylishly faded grandeur of the Spiegelsaal (Mir-
ror Hall).

This brilliant bar is a delightful retreat tucked into the street art-festooned courtyard of Haus
Schwarzenberg, the last ungentrified house around Hackescher Markt. Run by the artist col-
lective Dead Chicken, it's filled with metal monster sculptures and hosts wacky parties and
eclectic shows - from dada burlesque to Balkan post-punk concerts. Beer garden in summer.

Flatteringly lit and dripping with black-and-gold opulence, the Liberate would not look out
of place in Paris or New York. Only top-shelf spirits find their destinations here in classic
drinks poured amid decor that includes a mirror and a chandelier scavenged from the demol-
ished Palace of the Republic, East Germany's former seat of parliament.
