HAUS SCHWARZENBERG
In contrast to its luxe neighbours, Haus Schwarzenberg ( MAP GOOGLE MAP ; www.haus-
schwarzenberg.org ; Rosenthaler Strasse 39; M1, Hackescher Markt) is a final holdout in the
heavily gentrified area around the Hackescher Markt. Run by a nonprofit organisation,
it's an unpretentious, authentic space where art and creativity are allowed to flourish
beyond mainstream and commerce. Festooned with street art and bizarre metal
sculptures, the courtyards lead to studios, offices, an underground 'amusement park',
the edgy-arty Eschloraque Rümschrümp bar, an art-house cinema , and a trio of exhib-
its dealing with Jewish persecution during the Third Reich.

( MAP GOOGLE MAP ;

Otto Weidt was a broom and brush maker who risked his life protecting his blind
and deaf Jewish workers from the Nazis. The exhibit is inside the very workshop
where he hid an entire family in a room behind a cabinet, provided food and false pa-
pers and bribed Gestapo officials into releasing Jews scheduled for deportation. A
highlight is an emotional video in which survivors recall Weidt's efforts to save their
lives.

This exhibit uses artefacts and photographs to tell the extraordinary story of a girl
who needs no introduction. Who hasn't read the diary of Anne Frank, penned while in
hiding from the Nazis in Amsterdam? Frank perished from typhus at Bergen-Belsen
concentration camp just days before her 16th birthday. An entire room is devoted to
her diary and its profound impact on postwar generations.
