HACKESCHE HÖFE
The Hackesche Höfe is the largest and most famous of the courtyard ensembles
peppered throughout the Scheunenviertel. Built in 1907 it links Rosenthaler Strasse
with Sophienstrasse, and lingered through the city's division until being acquired by
West German investors in 1994. After a total makeover, the complex of eight inter-
linked courtyards reopened to great fanfare in 1996 with a congenial mix of cafes, gal-
leries, boutiques and entertainment venues.
The main entrance off Rosenthaler Strasse leads you to Couurt I
t I, prettily festooned
with ceramic tiles by art nouveau architect August Endell. One of Berlin's best cab-
arets, the Chamäleon Varieté , is located here, as is an art-house cinema. Shoppers
can look forward to plenty of flagship stores by Berlin designers. If you're a fan of the
little characters on Berlin traffic lights, stock up on souvenirs in the Ampelmann
Galerie . Court VII leads off to the Rosennhöffe, a frilly art nouveau-inspired courtyard
with a sunken rose garden and tendril-like balustrades.
