Getting Around in Brussels
Brussels boasts a highly efficient public transport system encompassing metro,
tram, and bus (STIB, Societé des Transports Intercommunaux Bruxellois). Trans-
port information: Tel: (0) 2 515 2000. A free map is available from the tourist of-
fice. The signs for the metro are blue with a white letter “M”; tram and bus stop
signs are red and white. Many of the metro lines also have aboveground bus and
tram connections. Note that the trams and buses stop “on request.” This means
you should raise your hand to signal the driver to stop.
Purchase transport tickets at metro stations; STIB offices, or newsstands: one
single ticket, €2.00; card for 5 journeys, €8.00; card for 10 journeys, €12.50; one-
day card for use on all STIB transport whenever you wish during the same day,
€7.00. The one-day pass is also available at tourist information offices.
The Brussels Card is a good bargain. Valid for 24 hours (€24), 48 hours (€36),
or 72 hours (€43), it provides free access to most of Brussels's 25 museums; free
public transportation, including the blue double-decker buses; and a 25 percent re-
duction at the famous mussels restaurant Chez Leon. It also comes with an illus-
trated guide booklet. Purchase at tourist information offices, hotels, and museums,
public transportation agencies, or online.
