In-Depth Information
Lake steamers at the far end of the Bahnhofstrasse at the Schiffstation (boat sta-
tion) offer several interesting cruises, including one to the eastern end of the lake
to an interesting old Swiss town, Rapperswil, known as the “City of Roses.”
Zürich has its share of cathedrals. The Grossmünster Cathedral stands brood-
ing on the east bank of the Limmat River. The cathedral has a statue of Charle-
magne, who is said to have built the original church. Almost opposite on the other
side of the river stands the FraümunsterCathedral, reached by crossing the Mün-
sterbrücke (Cathedral Bridge). Here, you can view the cathedral's famously beauti-
ful Chagall windows. Alongside the central station is the SwissNationalMuseum.
On exhibition are authentic rooms of the 16th and 17th centuries, removed from
their original sites and rebuilt within the museum. Zürich is not totally old in face.
Its Kunsthaus (Fine Arts Museum) is an attractive, modern building with a magni-
ficent collection of modern art.
There is no shortage of fine dining in Zürich. One of our favorite places that com-
bines an elegant medieval atmosphere with fine Swiss cuisine and wines at reas-
onable prices is Zunfthaus zur Zimmerleuten, “Carpenters' Guildhouse,” located
at Limmatquai 40, along the Limmat River in the Old Town. You can get there on
tram No. 4; get off at the Rathaus (Town Hall) stop. Tel: (01) 44 250 53 63; Fax:
(01) 44 250 53 64; www.zunfthaus-zimmerleuten.ch ; E-mail: info@zunfthaus-zim-
merleuten.ch.
