In-Depth Information
Notes: To reach the Zürich tourist office, exit from the trains, turning right at the
end of the tracks, and proceed directly through the main hall. The office will be
on your left. The tourist office can also make hotel reservations. A city map and
a brochure describing the Zürich public transportation system are available.
Getting Around in Zürich
The Ride with Us brochure is particularly helpful because it explains how to use
the self-service facilities of the city's transportation system, including rail (S-Bahn),
trams, buses, and funiculars. The Swiss passes include travel on the city network,
but the variety of Eurail passes are accepted only on the S-Bahn network. If you
have any type of Eurail pass, we recommend that you purchase a one-day or
multiple-day pass to cover the remaining public transport network in Zürich:
Zürich Day Ticket —24 hours within the city limits, CHF 8.60
Zürich Card —A convenient bargain for getting around Zürich. Offers use of all
forms of public transport within the greater Zürich area, including train, tram,
boat, bus, or funicular, plus free admission to 43 museums, a complimentary
drink in 24 restaurants, and several other discounts and bonuses. Purchase at
the Zürich Tourist Information Office in the rail station; 24 hours, CHF 24 (chil-
dren, CHF 16); 72 hours, CHF 48 (children, CHF 32).
Sights/Attractions/Tours
Obtain a copy of the brochure Zürich City Tours and Excursions from the tourist
office. This brochure describes city sightseeing, excursions by motor coach or by
trolley, cruises on the Limmat River as well as those on Lake Zürich, ascension of
Mount Uetliberg for a panoramic view of the city and Alps, and how to see Zürich
by night.
Escorted and unescorted tours are available at various times throughout the
week during certain seasons of the year, so be sure to check with the train inform-
ation office or the tourist office. Some of these excursions require rail pass holders
to pay supplemental charges. Payment of these charges, along with reservations
for the excursions, can be made at these offices.
For a relaxed “Classic Trolley Tour,” board a vintage Swiss trolley. For this two-
hour tour, you can sit and see the sights. Tours depart from the Hauptbahnhof at
0945, 1200, and 1400 daily. Fare: CHF 34; children up to age 16, half fare.
