Day Excursions
Bern is an ideal base for day excursions to almost any point in Switzerland.
Geneva is 1 hour and 40 minutes to the west by train; you can reach Zürich to the
east by rail in only 1 hour and 10 minutes. Travel north and, in the same amount of
time, your train will set you down in Basel on the banks of the Rhine.
The five day excursions that we have selected reveal the natural grandeur of the
country. The Golden Pass adventure takes you through Alpine surroundings, in
the comfort of a vista-dome railcar, to Lake Geneva and a cruise on the lake before
returning to Bern. The outing to Interlaken unfolds a panorama of towering peaks
along the shore of the Lake of Thun, where again you have the opportunity of a
lake cruise to conclude a memorable day.
Picture-postcard perfect, Lucerne will charm you with its scenery, cuisine, and
ambience. Promenade along its ancient walkways, scale nearby Mount Pilatus, or
cruise the Lake of Lucerne during your visit.
For a peek at a Disney-type setting that has been going strong since the 11th
century, journey to Rheinfelden, where the mighty Rhine River swirls past a medi-
eval backdrop that stirs the imagination. Or travel to Brig to catch the Glacier Ex-
press to Zermatt, where you can view the magnificent Matterhorn.
