In-Depth Information
Another unusual feature of Bern is its shopping arcades —nearly 4 miles of
them. They line the route of the walking tour suggested by Bern Tourismus and
offer one of the finest selections of wares and food to be found anywhere in the
world. The shopping arcades are completely covered, so they are weatherproof as
well as traffic-free and totally delightful. On Tuesday and Saturday mornings, there
are markets where Swiss farmers sell their meat and produce. Shop the city's ar-
cades 0900 to 1830 Monday through Friday (until 2100 on Thursday), and 0900 to
1600 Saturday. Pick up a shopping guide at the tourist offices.
Or, if museums appeal to you, Bern has plenty to choose from, including the
Swiss Alpine Museum, the Museum of Communication, the Einstein House,
and even a Museum of Psychiatry.
For a view of Bern from an unusual perspective, take the citytourbyraft on the
River Aare (tickets cost CHF 78 for adults and CHF 39 for children). The 1½-hour
rafting tour departs daily at 1700, reservations required, June through September,
