Barcelona is a beautiful and immensely varied city. Las Ramblas, the world-
renowed main avenue of the “Old City,” is one interesting part of an outstanding
whole. An entire day can easily be spent wandering up and down this lively, fas-
cinating street that stretches 2 kilometers between the Plaça de Catalunya and the
port. Begin at the “Diagonal” metro sign on Plaça de Catalunya (near the tourist in-
formation office) and head down toward the harbor area. Along the way, watch the
numerous entertaining street performers and peruse the variety of wares displayed
on every available inch of pavement.
On your right is LaBouqueria, declared to be Barcelona's “best market.” Farther
on, to the right, you will see the Gran Teatre del Liceu (the rebuilt old opera
house), where you can take a 40-minute tour that includes the Hall of Mirrors. The
