RENFE accepts the variety of Eurail passes, the
Eurail Por-
tugal-Spain Pass, Eurail Portugal-Spain Saverpass,
and
Eurail Spain Pass,
but it deviates from the basic rail pass concept in that certain trains, such as AVE
(
Alta Velocidad Espanola
, or Spanish High Speed) trains and Talgos operating
on high-speed lines, are not included, but rail pass holders do receive substan-
tial discounts. (Please see the Appendix for Eurail Portugal-Spain Pass and other
Eurail products prices.) Special sightseeing/tour trains such as
Al Andalus
and the
narrow-gauge FEVE are not included on the rail passes either, but tickets may be
purchased separately.
Travel bonuses for holders of a Spanish Eurail pass include:
• 20 percent discount on ferry crossings operated by Grimaldi Ferries: Barcelona
to Livorno
Valencia to Livorno
• 20 percent discount on Baleria lines:
Barcelona-Palma de Mallorca, Ciutadella, Ibiza, Mahon, and others
• 50 percent discount on FGC lines, including rack railways in Nuria and Montser-
rat, and cable lines in Gelida and Montserrat
The Spain Pass may be purchased for a minimum of three days of unlimited rail
travel in Spain within a two-month period.
Not to be outdone by French high-speed TGVs and Germany's ICEs, RENFE's
sleek
AVEs
are derivations of the French TGV (
train à grand vitesse
, or train of
great speed)
Atlantique.
