In-Depth Information
When the Norwegian government closed the Aurskog-Hoeland railway in 1960,
two steam locomotives and a selection of rolling stock from the narrow-gauge line
were given to the railway museum together with many structures from this private
railway that began operation in 1896. The museum also has 11 standard-gauge
and 4 narrow-gauge engines—all in operating condition.
Hamar's railway museum is the oldest in Scandinavia, and it is also the oldest
technical museum in Norway. No doubt it will still be in full operation during the
Norwegian Railway Bicentennial in 2054.
Hamar is also a sporting town, and its Olympic halls can attest to that. Visit
Hamar's Olympia Hall, the “Viking Ship,” and the Hamar Olympic Amphi Hall (or
the “Northern Lights Hall”). The Viking Ship is one of the largest sports halls in the
world and was the architectural symbol of the 1994 Winter Olympics. The Northern
Lights Hall is the world's largest wooden building. Check with the tourist office for
opening times.
