In-Depth Information
Another interesting landmark is Kytler's Inn, which has the distinction of being
the oldest residence in the city and, by tradition, the house of the witch Dame Alice
Kytler, born there in 1280. Dame Alice seems to have been a very nice lady except
that she acquired and disposed of husbands—four in all—in rapid succession. This
aroused the curiosity of the local folks, and in 1324 she was charged by Bishop de
Ledrede with witchcraft, heresy, and criminal assaults upon her husbands. Brought
to trial and condemned to burn at the stake as a witch, Dame Alice eluded her ac-
cusers and escaped across the Irish Sea to Scotland. Her maid, Petronilla, was
not as fortunate; the bishop had her burned at the stake as a suitable substitute.
Locals claim that Petronilla's ghost still haunts the cellar of what is now the Kytler
Inn on St. Kieran Street—possibly asking for back wages?
