Notes: To reach the tourist information office, turn left on Railway Road just after
passing the Great Southern Hotel on your left as you leave the railway station.
Railway Road crosses Muckross Road a short distance from the station. At the
Cinema, cross to the other side of the road. The Killarney Plaza Hotel and the
jaunting cars are on the right-hand side. Continue along Beech Road. Take a right
turn into New Street Car Park. The tourist office is a short distance on the left-hand
side.
Killarney is rivaled now by Dublin as the number one tourist attraction in the Re-
public of Ireland. Horse-drawn carriages known as jaunting cars take tourists to
feature sights including Muckross Abbey, the ruins of a 15th-century Franciscan
monastery; Ross Castle, on the banks of Lough Leane (which now offers memor-
able guided tours of the inner castle); and Muckross House, a 19th-century man-
or with a museum depicting local folk life and housing various crafts shops with
blacksmiths, weavers, and potters. Muckross Traditional Farms is also a very fine
attraction.
Jaunting-car rates are usually based on four passengers. If your party is fewer
than four, the tourist office may be just the place to find other passengers willing to
share the cost. The central jaunting-car stand in Killarney is a stone's throw from
the tourist office, so you won't have to return to the railway station.
Killarney's St. Mary's Cathedral is an impressive Neo-Gothic structure worthy
of a visit. The Great Southern Hotel, opposite the railway station, is a fashionable
hostelry of great beauty, and its amicable Punch-bowl Bar is a good place to pause
for a libation and friendly conversation.
There are many eating places to choose from. We found the food at the Flesk
Restaurant at 14 Main Street to be tasty and satisfying. One of the favorite spots
of the locals, too, the Flesk is known for its daily fresh fish specials, such as wild
salmon, and its live Dingle Bay lobsters.
