About one-third of the Republic of Ireland's population lives in or near Dublin. The
city is as intoxicating as its national brew, Guinness, which is also lovingly referred
to as Dublin's “water supply.”
O'Connell Street is Dublin's somewhat tarnished “Main Street,” the pulsating
heart of the old city and Ireland's broadest boulevard. A grand statue of the Irish pat-
riot Daniel O'Connell, The Liberator , stands at the foot of O'Connell Street, where
O'Connell Bridge crosses the River Liffey. A new sculpture of James Joyce's river
spirit, Anna Livia , is one of the many statues of national heroes posed along the way
to the Garden of Remembrance at Parnell Square.
Art galleries, museums, shopping areas such as the Powerscourt Townhouse
Center and Grafton Street, famous cathedrals, and elegant cafes are within walking
distance of O'Connell Street. The best-preserved examples of 18th-century houses
are also found nearby. St. Stephen's Green, at the top of Grafton Street, is
ringed with magnificently restored, stately Georgian residences with solid-colored
enameled doors and sparkling brass fixtures.
Arriving by Air

both Shannon and Dublin. Other air carriers stop only in Shannon, which has a
world-famous, duty-free shopping area featuring items produced in Ireland.
Shannon International Airport 's Tourist Information and Reservations Centre is in
the Arrivals Hall next to the main arrivals door. Hours: 0700-1730 daily.
Airport-City Links: Shannon connects with the rail station in Limerick by airport
bus service. Journey time: 45 minutes; fare: €5. Taxi fare to Limerick, about €35.
