Known as “the cradle of Finnish industry,” Tampere is the youngest of the “triangle
towns” of Finland, the others being Helsinki and Turku. The reference to a triangle
comes from the fact that all three cities are approximately 93 miles (150 kilometers)
apart from each other. The town of Tampere was granted its charter in 1779 by
Gustavus III, who was king of both Sweden and Finland at that time. From a mod-
est start, Tampere developed into an industrial and resort center early in the 19th
century. Today, with its 210,000 inhabitants, it is the third-largest city in Finland.
Tampere is a city of lakes and parks. Its two major lakes are connected by rapids
flowing over three waterfalls. Tampere is considered to be a “small” city. The city
center is located on a narrow isthmus that is divided by the rapids. The “smallness”
actually means that all shops, stores, restaurants, hotels, and other sights are within
easy reach of one another, which makes Tampere an easy city to explore on foot.
Many tours are offered through the tourist office, such as the Rapids Walk,
through the heart of the city, and the PispalaWalk, to the top of the ridge for a spec-
tacular view, then to the bohemian historical district. Learn about Finland's Grand
Duchy past during the In the Footsteps of the Tsar tour, or take the Art Tour, the
Guided Shopping Tour, or the Tour of Churches. Visit the website of the tourist
board for more listings. Many lake cruises are offered as well.
