Shopping for excellent Finnish glassware can be a full-time occupation. Numer-
ous Lahti department stores, as well as specialty shops, feature fine Finnish glass-
ware and other high-quality items. The city is well-known for its ready-to-wear gar-
ments for both men and women. The Finnish furniture industry is centered here,
and Lahti bread and beer are known all over Finland for their quality.
In summer Lahti's cultural life includes performances in the Kariranta open-air
theater and the open-air concerts at the Mukkula Tourist Centre. Lahti provides
an interesting as well as relaxing day-excursion site; it's a year-round attraction
you shouldn't miss.
Sights to see while in town include the HistoricalMuseum, the MuseumofMil-
itary Medicine, the Ski Museum, and the Museum of Art. The Lahti Tourist Of-
fice conducts a two-hour city tour every Wednesday starting at 1800 from June 1
through August 2.
Lahti has been described as Finland's most American city. Founded in 1905,
Lahti is, historically speaking, a young city, but it has grown more rapidly than
towns of similar age or older. One reason for its vigorous development is its geo-
graphic position in the center of southern Finland, at the junction of major traffic
routes. Another, we might add, is its friendly, courteous people.
