In-Depth Information
Helsinki's market square, besides presenting flowers, fish, vegetables, fruits,
and souvenirs, can also provide visitors with coffee and delicious sugared buns at
the square's tent cafe. Market hours are 0630 to 1500 Monday through Saturday.
From mid-May through August, the evening market hours are 1530 to 2000
Monday through Friday. Most shops in Helsinki are open 0900 to 1800 (or 2000)
weekdays and 0900 to 1400 Saturday.
Surrounded as the city is by the sea, there is a lot of island hopping you can do
while visiting Helsinki. A ride on a ferryboat will take you to Korkeasaari Island,
Helsinki's zoo; by ferry you can also reach Suomenlinna, a fortress island star-
ted by the Swedes, captured by the Russians, and shelled by the British before
being given to Finland, which used it as part of its sea defenses until 1973. Visit
www.suomenlinna.fi . Should you tire of all this activity, you can plan to relax in one
of Helsinki's excellent saunas.
