Rackham's Waterfront Because of the hip , hospitable, and
well-informed locals who congr egate within its appealingly casual
premises, Rackham's is the first pub w e visit ev ery time w e come to
Grand Cayman. The pub is set on an open-air pier jutting seawar d,
just south of the center of G eorge Town, and is pr otected from the
sun and rain by an overhanging roof. As you gaze seaward from your
perch her e, notice the schools of tarpon swimming beneath the
pier. The pub was named after “Calico J ack” Rackham, an 18th-
century pirate who seemed to delight in terrorizing the shipping lanes
offshore.
The friendly local cr owd at Rackham's includes paralegals, finan-
ciers, and office wor kers from throughout Canada, B ritain, and the
U.S.; about a half-doz en waterspor ts pr ofessionals; and a healthy
mixture of West Indian locals. Come here for insight into who's living
and working on G rand Cayman these days. E veryone—thanks par-
tially to the par ty-colored cocktails ser ved—gets along swimmingly
well. Shots of Jack Daniels cost CI$5 each, and a head-spinning v er-
sion of Cayman Islands lemonade (vodka, peach schnapps, triple sec,
cranberry juice, and whiskey sour mix) goes for CI$6. American and
international fare is ser ved at the r estaurant, including burgers, fries,
conch salad, and filet of beef with french fries. Salads and sandwiches
cost CI$9 to CI$12, with main courses priced from CI$13 to CI$28.
It's open M onday to F riday from 10am to midnight, S aturday and
Sunday 11am to 11pm. N. Church St. & 345/945-3860.
Wreck Bar & Grill One of our fav orite watering holes is at R um
Point, which can be r eached b y boat. D ivers and snor kelers, some
arriving with stingray “hickeys,” join expats and occasional cruise ship
passengers to form a v aried age gr oup and all appr eciate the charms
of this laid-back joint. I t's the latest reincarnation of an old thatched
bar that stood her e in the 1950s, during which time a bar tender
named “Old Judd” is said to hav e inv ented the world 's first fr ozen
Mudslide. Sunday is the most popular time to visit, when locals arrive
in their priv ate boats. I n addition to two-fisted drinks, enjo y West
Indian food, ranging fr om conch (fritters or cho wder) to jer k-pork
sandwiches and juicy burgers. You can eat outside at a picnic table
under a casuarina tree. The bartender's special is the Attlee Mudslide.
Saturday afternoons fr om 2 to 5pm is also a big time her e, with a
barbecue and live entertainment right on the beach. The bar and grill
is open daily from 10am to 5pm. Rum Point. & 345/947-9412.
