Figure 11.4 Stability over time of NP size distributions in lipid dispersions MO/
DOPE- PEG 2000 /OA containing increasing molar fractions of oleic acid (0, 5, 10, 15, 20,
30 mol % OA). J0 denotes the day of the NP preparation, whereas J2 denotes 2 days
of NP storage at room temperature.
dilution beyond 1/30 should provoke the dissociation of eventually presenting
micelles in the system as the cmc of DOPE-PEG 2000 is about 2
1 0 − 5 M .
Micelles could not be measured by QELS upon dilution to lower DOPE-
PEG 2000 concentrations. Based on the determined characteristic sizes, the
results in Figure 11.5 should be attributed to the formation of PEGylated
multicompartment lipid particles. The aggregation of the MO/DOPE-PEG 2000
(98/2 mol/mol) NPs into larger liquid crystalline objects upon dilution is typical
for cubosome and spongosome organizations.
